The team at Match approached us about a “dreamy, fairytale-like” 15-second animation for their new cosmetics gift set. We loved their vision right away: place their pastel pink product in a magical world full of whimsical flowers and animals. Cute, yes, but demanding a super smart technical solution.

The main challenge here was a dreamy cosmetic product animation scene that just doesn’t exist in reality, a.k.a., animated wildlife interacting with this gorgeous gift set in a lush meadow by the seaside. This is a highly specific art direction. It’s also something Match knew traditional photography couldn’t achieve — hence their call to us.

Why not make it with AI tools, you ask? Simply put, its tech is not there. AI lacks the granular control needed to achieve a specific camera motion, nail that natural lighting, or make targeted revisions based on client feedback. AI tools are famously haphazard when it comes to microdetails.

With CGI, however, we can move a blade of grass, make it longer, shorter, shinier, or raspier. Or, really, anything you can imagine. Here’s a case study on how we turned Project MT-18 into a stunning, dreamlike forest.

Deep dive: A step-by-step breakdown of our CGI workflow

1. The creative brief: Defining the dream

Building a dreamy cosmetic product animation - brief

Every great project starts with a clear vision. Or if it’s not clear, our team has to talk to the client until both sides agree on one. For this cosmetic product animation case, the Match team already had this lush, whimsical scenery in mind; they gave us a reference image of a dreamy forest scene with wildlife. Now, our art directors knew what we had to capture – we just needed to discuss the concept.

We came up with this: a seamless camera movement taking the viewer through a lush, heart-shaped foliage arch towards a splendid seaside view on the other side. As the camera pulls back, it reveals a deer, then a rabbit, and finally settles on the Match gift set. Cool, right?

2. Precision 3D modeling: Building the digital product

Now, after artistic visions comes the actual nitty-gritty of the technical engineering. The first step here was to build photorealistic 3D models of the Match cosmetic gift box and each product in it. Yep, even if they’re shown inside a box, we need to model each and every one to ensure they’re just like the real product.

3. Scene creation: Animating a living world

Then came the strategic challenges: this scene was complex, and that’s an understatement. Not only were there a ton of elements involved, but each had a different color and texture, and each had to look 100% real. Plus, a key component of the dreamy aesthetic was the lush foliage and grass. This density became our team’s biggest processing obstacle. But hey, it’s not their first rodeo. They optimized the scene over and over again until there were no glitches, even if you looked at it through a magnifying glass.

  • Lush foliage and grass: The crazy volume of animated grass and foliage meant we needed serious processing power. And the grass density slowed down the computer, too. This meant it was harder to update the scene during revisions.
  • Animating wildlife: We brought the scene to life by animating the wildlife, respecting the Match team’s wishes: the deer moving its head, and the rabbit grazing.
  • Processing-intensive details: If the grass wasn’t challenging enough, the animals were also super-complex assets. The skeletons and fur also slowed processing. We thus needed smart resource management throughout the project.

4. Iteration and refinement: The power of precise control

One way CGI stands out is that the client gets several precise adjustments based on their feedback — all the way until it matches their vision to a T.

  • Feedback: The initial meadow-like grass felt too long.
    • Solution: We adjusted the digital assets precisely and scaled down individual blades to create that shorter and denser texture. That manicured lawn look immediately achieved the lush, fairytale vision.
  • Feedback: Some initial flowers looked “a little too artificial.”
    • Solution: We diagnosed that the issue wasn’t just the flower model, but its scale and relationship to the gift box in the center. We thus replaced the larger, central flowers with smaller, more delicate ones, and put them slightly out of focus. This meant the viewer’s eye was drawn to the product.
  • Feedback: The visible soil broke the ‘dreamy’ illusion.
    • Solution: Our team ended up removing the soil entirely. The lush grass now grew all the way to the edge of the product box, and yep, we felt that final version was approaching fast.
  • Feedback: The overall scene was too complex to review efficiently.
    • Solution: We had to de-risk the project, so we offered previews in a “clay view,” meaning without any material and fur. Basically, we separated the approvals for animation from the approvals for lighting and textures. This saved Match time, streamlined feedback, and avoided costly re-rendering.

Project results: Delivering versatile, high-impact assets

Match Perfumes loved our final 15-second animation (and if you don’t believe them, see for yourself!). The foliage arch, the idyllic seaside scene, the gentle wildlife, and let’s not forget, the hero product all nailed their creative vision. Needless to say, it had immediate results in their campaign, too.

This multi-asset delivery from one simple creative build is what makes CGI such a smart investment. With unlimited creative options at hand, it’s cheaper, faster, and more convenient than commissioning separate photo and video shoots. Plus, we render the master animation in 4K or 8K, in different crops for YouTube story banners, Instagram, and more. This means one video project is actually a suite of assets — if that’s not maximizing return on investment, we don’t know what is!

Conclusion: Why CGI offers unparalleled creative freedom

The Match team said it, so we’ll double down on it: this level of creativity and precision would have been impossible with AI or traditional photography. Tiny details, perfect imperfections (that make products feel real), and groundbreaking rendering power come easy for CGI professionals. The result was not just a gorgeous animation, but a versatile set of marketing assets that bring ongoing value and brand credibility.

And hey, no matter what your brand’s vision is, we have the precision to build it. So get in touch with our CGI team to explore all the hows and whens.

The cost: Learn how we price our projects

We already said CGI is the cheaper option than traditional photography, and we’re sure of it. Think of all the photoshoots, reshoots, travel, and actual products saved. But that’s not all. Take a look at our pricing table to see how transparent it is, and how easy it is to calculate depending on what you want. Do you want an image or an animation? Should the background be white, use simple props, or custom (with unlimited creative freedom)? Use the calculator and, why not, speak with our team today!

FAQ

How was the 3D model of the cosmetic box created?

The process started with high-quality reference photos and design files of the actual Match product box and its contents. Our artists then built the 3D models, making sure they were a perfect digital replica, capturing every detail of the packaging.

What was the biggest technical challenge in this animation?

The main challenge was the scene’s complexity: lots of animated grass, foliage, and hyper-realistic fur on the deer and rabbit. These were processing-intensive and needed careful management of the scene’s resources so our team could do all the creative adjustments during the feedback rounds.

How did you handle client feedback on such a complex scene?

For a smooth revision process, we started out with low-resolution “clay” previews that showed the animation and camera movement without the heavy load of textures and fur. This let the client approve the core motion before we proceeded with the full, time-consuming render.

Why is a high-resolution CGI render so valuable?

A single 4K or 8K render is incredibly versatile. From that one master file, we can create multiple crops and formats tailored for different platforms, like vertical video for Instagram Stories, wide formats for YouTube, and square crops for feed posts. This means maximum value and brand consistency.

Why use CGI instead of AI for a project like this?

This project required a super-specific creative vision and precise control over camera motion, lighting, and the movement of every blade of grass and animal. While AI can generate random scenes, only CGI provides this level of precision that nails the artistry and lifelikeness to a T.
