Working on the Primal Duality fragrances challenged us in all the right ways. We had to embody the contrasting spirits of their perfumes through two striking animals: the Vicuña and the Tiger. This meant hours spent on realistic fur and atmospheric moonlight. The tiger’s complex facial expressions required even more attention.

But we wanted to do them justice and show them exactly as the spirit animals Primal Duality intended. Our deliveries (especially on a fast turnaround) thrilled our client. And us, too. It’s always rewarding to see how our cinematic animations bring attention to the new product, tell the brand’s story, and drive results.

Here’s the thing: translating a fragrance into an image is notoriously difficult. But when you’ve got two fragrances, designed as a pair, and yet to launch, it becomes near-impossible. Dual-fragrance collection Primal Duality was exactly this sort of creative challenge. Our clients needed a visual narrative that would, one: solidify their brand identity; and two: embody two powerful and contrasting animal spirits, the Vicuña and the Tiger.

The creative vision our clients started with was placing these two gorgeous animals in a stylized, cinematic night setting that felt authentic and magical. However, the practicalities of safely filming a wild Vicuña and a Tiger (especially together in a controlled, moonlit environment with perfect product placement) were impossible. Not to mention how unethical it is to stress animals for human gain. It’s just not what we do in 2025.

This is where CGI shines bright, and the Primal Duality team knew it. With CGI, you move the entire production into a digital environment. This means full creative control, and building that impossible scene, shot by shot, until you’re happy with every pixel.

So here’s a detailed breakdown of how we made that happen, and how Primal Duality got their desired results and more.

Deep dive: A step-by-step breakdown of our CGI animation workflow

1. The role of CGI in luxury branding and the creative brief

The role of CGI in luxury branding and the creative brief

We love it when our clients have a clear vision in mind. This was exactly the case: our client explained in our initial brief that Primal Duality was based on the tension between two contrasting concepts, Solar Air and Nocturnal Earth. The two concepts would be represented by the said animals: the Vicuña (with its golden coat, initially seen on a sun-drenched plateau), and the Tiger (with its mesmerizing stripes, initially seen in a dense jungle).

However, we had a series of discussions, after which we suggested a pivot. Rather than two separate scenes, create a Ramadan night theme, magical, yes, but grounded in reality, and unifying both animals (hence, both products). Plus, let’s be honest, night always evokes mystery and exclusivity, like so many luxury perfume campaigns already prove. This way, our cosmetic product animation would truly serve the brand’s refined identity. Our client trusted our creative take, and we got the go-ahead for our favorite bit.

2. Precision 3D modeling of organic forms

A close-up viewport shot of the lioness model lying down. The grey, untextured model is surrounded by 3D foliage geometry, with the software's properties panel visible.A wide, rendered night shot of the lioness in a forest clearing. Moody moonlight illuminates the animal, contrasting it against the dark trees and deep shadows.A close-up viewport angle of the vacuna's head grazing near the ground. The view highlights detailed grass geometry and fur strands within the Blender user interface.A stylized night render of the 3D animal drinking from a stream. The scene features dramatic lighting, mountain silhouettes, and a starry sky with a large moon.

This is our first technical state: 3D modeling, done with extreme precision. Usually, it’s products, and, no matter how intricate, they’re never as complex as two different animals, with their skeletons, muscles, and movement. Nailing that anatomical accuracy was paramount here. So we used high-quality photographs of each animal to replicate every detail and compare until we couldn’t tell the model from the photo.

But no process is without its hurdles. The first one here was creating organic animal forms that would change shape naturally during animation. Take the Vicuña: we had to capture the unique curvature of its elegant neck and its slender posture, and make sure these wouldn’t deform in all sorts of wonky ways when the animal moved. For the Tiger, the focus was on its powerful musculature and detailed facial expressions. Our first priority was thus establishing a clean, purposeful topology, a.k.a., how muscles will flex, and skin will stretch.

3. Texturing, shading, and nailing the 'Impossible Shot'

A split-screen view in 3D software showing a vacuna grazing on the left and a lioness resting on the right, both displayed in untextured solid shading.

Once everyone was happy with the 3D models, we could move to the bit where we make the scene come alive. That is texturing, shading, and building the environment that brings it all together. Our artists created the moonlit river scene (that you can admire below!) and solved the “impossible shot.” Tiger and Vicuña, side by side, telling the story of two great perfumes.

This stage is where literally every pixel matters. We developed multi-layered textures for the animals’ fur to make sure it reacted naturally to light. We also made various materials for the glistening water of the river, the damp foliage on the banks, and, of course, the premium finish of the perfume bottle.

Then came the light. No, really, there’s no photorealism without replicating light exactly the way it interacts with objects in real life. Plus, we carefully calibrated the moonlight setup. First, we used a strong key light to simulate the moon for those high-contrast reflections on the water. Second, we employed soft rim lighting on the animals to separate them from the dark background and highlight their fur texture. That’s what makes the final scene so cinematic.

4. Animation, rendering, and post-production

This is where our team brought the static digital assets to life. The 3D models were rigged and then animated to create subtle, realistic movement. The Vicuña is seen drinking from the river with delicate moves, and the Tiger is doing what a tiger does best: chilling and exuding power. The tiger animation also included a second scene with greater focus on the perfumes, where the Tiger is seen walking away in the background. That’s for an added layer of narrative depth, driving the commercial point home.

The rendering process brought all the individual elements (models, textures, lighting, and animation) together. This step takes everything our computers have. But without it, there would be no premium brand identity. Our last stage — post-production — included color grading and contrast adjustments. At last, every frame aligned with the luxurious, mysterious tone of the campaign.

Conclusion: The power of CGI for visionary brands

CGI is smart and flexible beyond words. Using our professional team, Primal Duality brought two animals together into a magical scene that they simply could not have achieved with traditional photography. Brands choose us when “impossible” is in the brief. Complex organic modeling, atmospheric lighting, and high-end product visualization are our specialties. We work under demanding timelines to build a world that solidifies a brand’s identity and deepens its connection to the audience.

“We wanted the Welpix team to bring our new fragrance line, ‘Primal Duality,’ to life. The gist of it was contrasting the mysterious Vicuña with the powerful Tiger. The team went above and beyond.

It was really impressive to see how they handled the hyper-realistic fur and movement under such a tight deadline, too. The final animations were set in a stunning moonlit atmosphere, just as we envisioned our Ramadan campaign. We’re thrilled with how these cinematic visuals turned out.”

How Primal Duality saved money (and surpassed limitations) with CGI

We always say CGI is cheaper and faster than traditional photography. But in this case, it goes one step further: traditional photography simply wouldn’t have worked here. Primal Duality surpassed real-world limitations and saved a ton of money by working with us. Why? Because now, they have a suite of stunning assets they can use and reuse across different campaigns and seasonal promotions.

FAQ

How do we prepare the necessary reference images for 3D modeling?

For maximum accuracy, provide high-quality photographs of the subject from multiple angles, plus measurements. As in this project, clear reference imagery is the foundation for creating a lifelike and anatomically correct 3D model.

What technical steps ensure a complex 3D animal model is accurate?

Our process focuses on precise topology to ensure the model deforms realistically during animation. We manage the polygon count for efficiency while capturing fine details, like musculature and facial features. This was vital for both the Tiger and Vicuña models in this project.

How is hyper-realistic moonlight on water achieved?

We use advanced shading techniques and specialized rendering engines to simulate how light reflects and refracts on a water’s surface. By controlling material properties and light sources down to the pixel, we can create convincing effects like the shimmering moonlight seen in this campaign.

What is the difference between high-res and low-res CGI outputs?

High-resolution (High-Res) files are rendered with maximum detail for large-scale use like print advertising. Low-resolution (Low-Res) files are optimized with smaller file sizes for fast loading on websites, e-commerce pages, and social media, ensuring a smooth user experience.

How do clients typically use the CGI animations we deliver?

Our CGI assets are incredibly versatile. Clients use them for primary campaign videos, social media teasers, e-commerce product pages, digital billboards, and print advertisements. This project’s assets were used across multiple digital channels to launch the new fragrance line.
