MATCH: Bringing a Dreamy Forest Scene to Life in 3D
Our task was to turn Match’s ethereal, fairytale-inspired vision into a (just as cool but) photorealistic CGI animation. This would put their new product line in an enchanting world reflective of their delicate aesthetic. Needless to say, it could resonate on a whole new level with their audience.
The Challenge: Balancing artistry with technical complexity
The greatest technical bottleneck came from the very elements that made the client’s fairytale vision so enchanting. Think all the dense foliage, lush grass, and intricately rigged wildlife. Superb, easy to imagine, but hard to make 100% realistic. Take the rendering of the animals’ fur: super computationally-heavy, slowing down previews, and of course, making it harder for us to keep an agile feedback loop.
The Process: Agile collaboration and workflow innovation
Our talented 3D artists and creative engineers took it step by step to deliver MATCH Perfumes their much-desired vision. First, we engineered a hybrid review process using low-res clay animations and high-res stills. This meant quicker feedback, which in turn meant more precise refinements. For example, our client suggested we make the grass shorter and denser. We then added smaller, out-of-focus flowers to enhance the dreamy aesthetic (with an emphasis on “out-of-focus” — the hero product is always the primary focus!).
The Outcome: An enchanting and versatile brand asset
MATCH Perfumes loved our final 15-second animation (and if you don’t believe them, see for yourself!). The clip takes the viewer slowly through a heart-shaped foliage arch. On the other side is an idyllic seaside scene. The camera journey is slow on purpose: pay attention and you’ll discover gentle wildlife and plants before settling on the hero product. It was a meticulous, collaborative process, as it always is.
